HEARTWORM: AMERICAN HEARTWORM SOCIETY CANINE HEARTWORM & INEXPENSIVE PREVENTION - article on a breed site IVOMEC 1% STERILE INJECTIBLE - This is what we use on our dogs as heartworm preventative. We buy it at Tractor Supply or online at this source. Please note that our dogs are tested annually for heartworm despite the fact that we self-medicate. The dosage is: Ivomec 1% solution - 1/10 cc per 10 lbs. of dog weight and we use a 1cc insulin syringe to draw the dose. It is recommended to dilute the Ivomec in propylene glycol (for palatability) @ 1 part Ivomec to 9 parts PG. We used to dilute in orange juice, but have since heard that the acidity in the OJ can affect the latency of the ivermectin. So we do not dilute it. Also please note that we ONLY TREAT OUR SHORTHAIRS with this. It is NOT for every breed of dog, and can be fatally toxic to collies and some other herding breeds.
